A former bank in Grimsby is undergoing an exciting transformation, evolving into a vibrant community hub. In 2023, the charity known as CARE (Christian Action & Resource Enterprise) took over the premises of the old Royal Bank of Scotland located on Victoria Street, dedicating two years to rejuvenate this historic building.
With the aid of the talented award-winning designer Scott Maddux, the ground floor has been completely revamped. Early visitors have shared their impressions, likening the atmosphere to that of "a five-star boutique hotel" and even "a stately home." What a remarkable shift from its previous use!
Anne Bickerstaffe, the chief executive officer of CARE, emphasized the vision behind this project: "We aimed to create a space that deviates from the typical institutional atmosphere often found in community centers. We firmly believe that individuals deserve to experience beauty and dignity, particularly during challenging times. This environment communicates to everyone that they truly matter from the instant they step inside."
Scott Maddux explained the design philosophy, stating, "It was crucial to engage in a dialogue with the building’s rich history, which has witnessed countless lives over the years." The newly designed ground floor features a welcoming public living room, a reception area for guests, private rooms for crisis support, and even a small kitchenette to cater to visitors’ needs.
Accessibility improvements are currently underway, including the installation of a lift and a central staircase, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the facility. Once completed, the upper floors will offer additional spaces for various groups, activities, and partnerships with local organizations.
Mark your calendars: the CARE Hub is set to officially open its doors on January 19.
